  • Registration: (see details in How Do I Join? under FAQs)

  • Judges for the main prize pool: The Blockflow Alliance DAO

  • Theme: Why So Serious?

"We named it Why So Serious because it invites participants to break free from conventional boundaries. The challenge is to make something creative, playful & experimental. The emphasis is on the original spirit of hacking—exploring, creating, and enjoying the process." - Vlad

Yes. Today, I am proud to announce that we are going to empower the freedom to reinvent the wheel, to explore the unexplored, to challenge the norm, and to think outside the box and break free from the conventional boundaries to push the limitations of our scarce imagination and stretch reality so thin, we'll start another big bang as it retracts.

Whew. (That's quite an intro!)

Let's dive into the details!

The Blockflow Alliance DAO, together with our biggest community developers has curated the biggest event by far! We're having a hackathon on September the 9th to the 30th! And the theme? It's focused on fun, creativity and playfulness. This hackathon is designed to encourage experimentation and challenging the serious projects! Yeah, we're coming for them.

The rules are simple. Create something really beautiful, or something really done messed up. I'm for real!

Massive Prize Pools!

This hackathon is sponsored by the Blockflow Alliance DAO, and there is a total of $20'000 in ALPH prizes to be won:

1st Prize: $5'000 worth of ALPH
2nd Prize: $2'500
3rd Prize: $2'500
4th through 10th: $1'000 each.

We're not done yet! In addition to the main prizes, our biggest ecosystem projects will be giving out special partner prizes. Each project will vote for their favourite dApp and award prizes in their native tokens or in ALPH.

But wait, there's more! In addition to the main and ecosystem prizes, we also have special KOL prizes! Yes, it's like a Forbes interview, but with the gazette, MonsieurTK, Layer1Hunter, and Ivan Shigeo.

This is an online event, and everyone is welcome to join!

DApp Requirements:

  1. Be on-chain: the dApp must be deployed on the Alephium blockchain. It can be a fully functioning application or just a proof-of-concept. The key requirement is that it must be on-chain and usable.

  2. Be creative, playful & experimental: It can be a fully-featured dApp or something playful or experimental, challenging traditional ideas of what a dApp should be. Participants are encouraged to focus on creativity. It can be a game, a poetic expression, a puzzle, a time-based lottery, or something entirely different. The more unconventional, the better.

  3. All formats welcome: Participants can hack together, or alone, as long as they think outside the box. The hackathon is as much about the process and interaction as it is about the final product. But you do you!

  4. Use the Oracles (nice to have): It’s a plus if you use the Alephium Oracles. The implementation can be as simple or complex as the participants desire, as long as it showcases the potential of Oracles.

Here are the criteria for judging:

  1. Creativity: How unique and imaginative is the dApp?

  2. User Experience: Is the dApp fun or intriguing to interact with?

  3. Why so serious factor: IS IT FREAKING FUN? Weird? Viral? Beautiful? Disturbing? Or beautifully disturbing??? BRING IT!!

  4. General Requirements: Is the dapp fully deployed and functional on Alephium? Are the other requirements fulfilled?

  5. Bonus point for the use of oracles: Does the dApp incorporate Oracles? How?

FAQs

What kind of hackathon is this?

Why So Serious is a unique hackathon designed to celebrate the launch of Oracles on the Alephium blockchain. The goal is to encourage developers to create innovative, playful, and experimental decentralized applications (dApps) that could leverage Oracles. The focus is on creativity and experimentation rather than functionality or practicality.

How will the prizes be paid?

All prizes will be paid in $ALPH. The conversion rate for prizes will use the $ALPH price average over the 21-days of the hackathon (9th - 30th September 2024).

What can I build? Do you have examples?

We have brainstormed some crazy ideas:

  • The Blockchain Poetry Generator - Generates random poems based on blockchain data, influenced by Oracle inputs like price of a specific token - optional feature: users can mint poems as NFTs.

  • Time-Traveling NFT - Mint NFTs that change over time based on Oracle data, such as token prices.

  • Virtual Garden - Grow a virtual garden where plant growth is influenced by Oracle data (such as prices of various tokens) - optional features: Trade or gift unique plants as NFTs.

  • Alephium Escape Room - An escape room game where clues and solutions are influenced by Oracle data. - optional features: timed challenges with varying Oracle inputs.

  • Soundscape of the Market - Generate ambient music based on real-time Oracle data, such as token volatility. - optional feature: Stream live soundscapes or mint specific moments as audio NFTs.

  • Oracle-Powered Light Show - A dApp that generates a visual light show based on Oracle data, such as the real-time price of tokens or the number of transactions on the blockchain. Users could input their data source to customize the light show. - optional feature: The light show could be displayed in a virtual environment & users could affect it by investing real tokens in it and fuel the light show by their destruction.

How will I submit my project?

At the end of the hackathon, you’ll need to submit your participation through a form (will be shared later):

  • The frontend of your PoC

  • The link to GitHub with your code

  • A short description of your project + your $ALPH address.
